Job Summary

Work setting: Remote/work-from-home, with travel for in-person meetings, as needed. Employee may work from home anywhere in Tennessee. Travel required for in-person meetings (approximately quarterly).

About us: Family Voices of Tennessee is a program staffed by families to support families raising children with disabilities, complex health care needs and chronic illnesses. We connect families with each other, community resources and tools to navigate the health care system. We help families become effective advocates for their children and help professionals partner in family-centered care. We strive to improve public policy for children with complex health care needs, chronic illnesses and disabilities, their families and caregivers. Family Voices of Tennessee started in 1993 as a program of the Tennessee Disability Coalitionand became the first state chapter of the national Family Voices organization.

Job Responsibilities

Key Duties: 

  • Provide resources, information, support, and training to parents/families and individuals. Topics include:
    • Tennessee health care system for children and youth with complex health care needs, chronic illness and disability
    • Medicaid Waiver programs including Employment and Community First CHOICES and the Katie Beckett Program in Tennessee
    • Home and community-based services for children and youth with complex health care needs, chronic illness or disability
    • Building advocacy skills, at the individual and systems level
  • Build and maintain family/consumer network channels, including through social media and one-to-one engagement that will allow families to be connected, and engage in activities to change policies or health care systems
  • Work with the public policy team to understand policy proposals related to children and youth with complex health care needs, chronic illness or disability
  • Assist in developing communications or resources for families about policy proposals
  • Outreach to parents/families of children with complex health care needs about Family Voices of Tennessee and all programs
  • Identify family leaders
  • Represent FVTN including through participation on advisory or governing bodies related to furthering the mission of FVTN
  • Document work activities including outreach, training and contacts with families in online database (Salesforce CRM) in a timely manner. Salesforce training will be provided.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications: 

  • Must be the parent or family member of an individual with complex health care needs, chronic illness or disability, or self-advocate.
  • Must have working knowledge through training and/or experience of health care and related service systems for children with complex health care needs, chronic illnesses or disabilities.
  • Must have skillset to build and maintain relationships and be able to work well with individuals of diverse backgrounds and cultural traditions.
  • Must have strong communication skills and be able to speak effectively in public.
  • Must be comfortable and knowledgeable using a computer, database and work-related technologies.
  • Bilingual English/American Sign Language or Bilingual English/Spanish, a plus
  • Experience using social media, a plus.

Benefits

The Coalition observes 12 paid days off for holidays each year. Paid time off (PTO) accrues per pay period (semi-monthly). Annual PTO earning for employees who have been employed 0-5 years is 18 days and increases with tenure to a maximum of 32 days per year. Flexible scheduling is permitted.

Part-time employees are eligible to enroll in supplemental health plans through Colonial Life and a medical flexible spending account and/or dependent care flexible spending account through Pinnacle Financial Partners.

Mutual of America provides the Coalition’s employer sponsored 403(b) Retirement Plan. The Coalition matches the amount our employees contribute to the plan dollar for dollar up to 6% of employee salary after the employee has been with the Coalition for one year.
